Take your Bible and turn with me to the book of Revelation 1:17-18. I want to preach to you a message that I believe the Lord is going to use in this church this morning entitled, "The Gospel of Hell". I believe it will be encouraging. "Do not be afraid, I am the first and the last. I am He who lives and was dead and behold I am alive forevermore and I have the keys of hell and death".
Father, we thank you today that you are the victor. We thank you today for your faithfulness to our lives and we thank you for your presence here this morning. Holy Spirit, we ask that we would decrease and you would increase and Father, that your Word would have its perfect work in our lives, in the precious name of Jesus, your son. Amen
Turn with me to the Book of Luke, chapter 16. I want to read something to you that I think is very important as we begin this study on the Gospel of Hell. The word "gospel" means "good news". How many of you know there's good news about hell this morning? Luke 16:19-31, "There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and faired sumptuously everyday but there was a certain beggar named Lazarus full of sores who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. Being in torment in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. Then he cried and said, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue for I am in torment in this flame". Abraham said, "Son, remember that in your lifetime, you received your good things and likewise Lazarus, evil things. But now he is comforted and you are tormented. Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot nor can those from there pass to us. Then he said, "I beg you therefore, father, that you would send someone to my father's house for I have 5 brothers that he may testify to them lest they also come to this place of torment". Abraham said to him, "They have Moses and the prophets. Let them hear them". He said, "No, Father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead they will repent". But he said to him, "If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead".
It's so important that we understand that we have a wonderful, merciful, faithful, loving God. As I look through the world and I see things that are happening in this world, one of the things that I have purposed in my heart is to draw closer to God than I ever have before in my life. In the last couple weeks in this church we've been asking God to touch us in a special way, to meet with us, to draw us close. We've talked about the person of the Holy Spirit as He walks with us and talks with us as a personal friend. Last week we talked about seeking the face of God, how that is the priority of the Christian and that if we will, we'll see God heal our land, touch our nation and move in our lives. How many of you believe that God is beginning to answer the prayers in this place?
One of the most memorable things that I have had happen in my years as a minister, it happened one Sunday night when we were at Parsonville, we had come back from a series of meetings. Many of us had travelled a long distance and came back and God had touched the lives of many of the people in our church. That Sunday morning we had a wonderful time, the presence of the Lord was there but that Sunday night all we had purposed was really not to preach but to have people share the testimony of what God had done in their lives. Now you know me and you'll get to know me a little better over the years but as a pastor I'm very leary to have people share testimonies in church. I believe we overcome the enemy by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony but how many of you have ever endured some of the worst testimonies ever in the house of God? They've been painful, you know what I'm talking about? That night the Lord had touched some people very powerfully and began to share what God was doing in their life. The Holy Spirit showed up in that place in such a marvelous way and we just began to pray. We called people to the altar and began to lay hands on them and many were slain in the Holy Spirit and as a matter of fact I don't remember that many were actually still standing. God began to even touch our kids. My daughter was just weeping and I had never seen her do that before. I had never seen kids seek the face of God like that in my life.
At one point in that meeting, a lady came up to me and she had a boy named, Chad. Alan and Tammy were just precious people in our church, God had wonderfully saved them. As a matter of fact, he owned one of the most frequented bars in town and when he got saved, God dealt with his heart and had to sell his liquor license, he couldn't keep it. That night their son began to have a vision and he came up to me crying. I had never seen a 9 year old in this state and I began to wonder, "God, what in the world are you doing in this church and what do I do about it". This boy was crying, he said, "Pastor, I see lots of people and they're lined up in a line and each of them are dropping off of a cliff and at the end of that cliff there is fire and they're screaming. There are hundreds of thousands of them and he said, "I can hear their screams, they're yelling for help and calling on the name of Jesus but pastor, it's too late. We've got to tell them about Jesus, we've got to let them know that He's alive. We've got to tell them what He did for them on the cross. At that moment I was so stirred in my heart and that young little boy as he wept before the Lord went away. It moved our church that night into hours of intercessory prayer as we sought the Lord. That look on his face I'll never forget. I don't know what that young man is doing right now, I pray he's telling people about Jesus.
You see, there is good news about Hell. Hell is spoken of extensively in the Gospels. The word "Gospel" means "Good News. The Gospels are the good news of God's love for us. The good news of God's justice and the good news of salvation.
How many of you are thankful that you're saved and you know where you're going today? You're thankful that you've got a place in Heaven, you're thankful that you know that God has gloriously forgiven you of sins. Someone once said, "Read the Bible and it will scare the hell out of you". I couldn't disagree with that statement more. The Bible is God's love letter to mankind.
We're not told to scare people but the Bible shows us the things that God has gone through so that we don't have to. In 1 John 4:18 it says, "There is no fear in love but perfect love casts out all fear because fear involves torment but he who fears has not been made perfect in love". In Luke 12:4-7 it says, "And I say to you my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do but I will show you who you should fear. Fear Him who after he has killed has power to cast into hell, yes I say to you fear Him. Are not 5 sparrows sold for 2 copper coins and not one of them is forgotten before God, but the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows".
I want you to look at me this morning because one of the things that we need to remember as a church is that we're seeking God. As we're asking God to touch us, as we're asking God to do a work in this place is that one of the greatest things that we can ever tell people is about the love of Jesus. Many Christians will share the fear of Hell and the fear of dying but the truth is this, if we have the fear of the Lord in our hearts, that means the reverence and the respect and the love for God that surpasses everything else, we don't have to fear what awaits those who don't know God. A fear of the Lord doesn't mean that we're to be afraid of God. This word when it talks about fear (He who has the power to send you to hell). Listen to me, it's not talking about the devil, it's talking about the God who is just and one day we will stand before Him and He will say, "Yes, I've known you and you have known my son, you have accepted Him as your savior, you have lived for me, you have known me and I know you". How many of you know God is familiar with you this morning? The truth is He knows how many hairs are on your head or in my case how many aren't. Listen, the truth is this, the Bible says that we don't need to fear things. I've spent the last week with my grandmother, she's 85 years old and will be 86 next month.
She's gone through so many operations in the last couple months and now is in a place where she is rehabilitating. She has no fear of going to heaven. I'm so thankful for a heritage of those who even when they're going through some of the hardest things in their life can say, "I don't like what I'm going through, I don't like what is happening in my body, I don't like growing old but I sure am glad that I know Jesus".
What a wonderful thing it is to know the Lord and the Bible says that God loves and cares for each and every one of us. When God talks about the good news of what Christ has done, He always reminds us that He cares even with some of the hardest words that we can see written in the word of God. They're always covered with His love. They're always covered with His provision.
The gospel is good news and there is good news about hell. Are you ready for it this morning? Number one, there is one.
Some of you are thinking, "I don't know if that makes me happy". I'm going to talk to you about why it's good news that there is a hell. Number 2 , the good news is that you don't have to go there. Someone say a good amen. First of all we need to understand that we serve a God who is a God of justice and a God of judgement. At some point everyone of us will give an account for what we've done but why is this so important when a church is seeking the face of God? Why is a message like this so essential to a body of believers who want nothing more than the best that God has for them? Because it is important that we always understand what God has done for us. It is important that we always understand why the mission that God has given us to win souls is so vital in this world. Why is it important to understand about hell? Because not one day should ever go by that we don't appreciate the great sacrifice that Jesus made so that we can have provision to live the life of abundance and of purity that God has made a way for us.
Hebrews 9:27 says, "It is appointed for men to die once and then the judgement". You see, that's good news. There's good news that there is justice for all the horrible things that are happening in the world. I want you to look at me, Christian, as you begin to serve the Lord more earnestly as you seek His face. The more you seek the face of God and the more you become familiar with His holiness and His purity, the more clear the evil of this world is to the believer, the easier it is to pick up this newspaper and think what a wicked world we live in. It's very easy, very quick, for the enemy to come in and start whispering, "What kind of God would let this stuff happen?"What kind of a God would permit these things to go on in the world and allow this to bring some kind of discouragement to the heart of the believer? I've seen more Christians come on fire for God and then pay attention to whats happening in the world and begin to wonder if serving God is even worth it. I want to declare to you this morning, "Yes it is". Someone say a good amen.
The truth is this, there is justice that is coming for all the wickedness that we see, for all the evil that is in the world, for all the bad that the devil has done, for all the wickedness that there is. Listen, there is going to be justice for those who have mistreated others. How could God ever let someone like a Hitler not be judged or a Stalin or a Ted Bundy? All the rapists and the scheisters, all those guys who would call on the phone and swindle some of our dear older people, even in Florida, out of their inheritance because they want to make a buck? I want to tell you there is justice. How many of you are thankful for that today? That is good news.
I look at the world, I look at some of the things that happen with my family. I was thnking about this message this week as I sat in that hospital room with my grandmother. This week she had to have her leg amputated. Listen, that is not the fault of a Christian who has sinned. How many of you know that we live in a fallen world? One thing that I am thankful for is that the devil will one day get his due because of the pain that he has caused other people. Someone say a good amen. I take great comfort in that. I thank the Lord that "vengeance is not mine but vengeance is God's" says the Lord. That is why when we see those things happen it makes it so much easier to minister the love of Jesus Christ because although life is not fair, the love of Jesus Christ is more than fair and He covers over the hurts, he covers over the sins and He makes a way where there was no way. I want to tell you that evil in this world will be judged and taken care of. That is good news.
The good news is that the devil will get his due and those who have done unspeakable things, if they don't come to Christ, they will pay and I don't have to do that. The good news is that "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" and the truth is that all of us deserve hell. God has made a way of escape, that those who know Christ have the promise of heaven and do not have to have the consequence of hell. Even those who have done evil and unspeakable things that His grace is able to touch even the most hardened heart because we serve such a merciful and powerful God and those people can be set free and come to know the Lord as well.
Why is it important that we know the good news, the gospel of hell, the good news that we serve a Savior who is risen and alive. The truth is today that hell is not a popular topic, we hear that said over and over again. I don't think that hell was ever a popular topic but I want to remind you that hell is a part of the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It's part of the good news, it's part of what God wants to say. Someone once said, "Preach hell and do it with tears". I've heard many turn or burn sermons, many fire and brimstone messages that were preached with a sense of joy and harshness that instead of drawing people to Christ actually left them with a sense of fear of the very God who sent His own son to save them from that disaster.
Jesus taught about hell as a warning of why he came, as a reason of why God would send his own son so that you and I could be set free. It was taught matter of factly, it was taught with pleading so that no one would go. Jesus taught on it to emphasize the depth of the depravity of our sin and how lost we really are withour Jesus. Christian, I want you to listen to me because one of the things that we said last week as we've been drawing close to Christ is that the more we come to the Lord, the more we're really going to want to be drawn away from the sins that we live. It's interesting in these last days how believers are being drawn into things, and I've heard more Christians say, "I never dreamed that would be me doing that". How many of you have ever met someone like that? For some of us in this room that may be us.
The truth is that it's so important that we understand the depth of why Christ came, of the battle that was fought and was won, so that we never become dull in our senses and dull in our response to Christ or apathetic in our passion for Jesus so that we are easily drawn and led away. The Bible says "In the last days that even the very elect would be deceived". Listen to me, how many of you know this morning that none of us should be deceived, it's important. The good news is that we don't have to be. The good news is that He's constantly drawing us to Him despite everything that we've done, He still came to set us free. We should never forget what He did.
I want to tell you that truthfully I'm tired of the age that we live in of whitewashed, stiff shoes, cream of wheat Christians, cream of wheat pastors and preachers who are afraid to preach about hell because it is not pretty and it is not positive. The truth is that the message of Jesus Christ is always positive. Someone say a good amen. Hell is not pretty but neither was the cross, neither is our sin, neither are the things that we've done. The truth is that not a day goes by when I get into prayer with the Lord that I wonder why in the world that He would even save someone like me. How many of you have ever felt the same way? The truth is we didn't deserve it. What a marvelous God we serve. It is precisely because there is a hell that we need to communicate the immensity of what our sin has done and the consequences of it and we need to communicate the great love that Jesus Christ has shown each and every one of us.
One mega church pastor was asked by Larry King why he never taught on sin or on hell. He said, "Well, Larry, we try to come at it from a very positive point of view". God help us. Listen, hell is bad news for the devil and it is only bad news for those who don't know Jesus but it is good news for all those who come to the Lord because the truth is it is bad news for the devil. There are 162 references in the New Testament alone that warn of hell and 70 of them come from Jesus himself. How many of you think that's an important topic?
I want to talk to you this morning about what hell is like. Many people say that they're going through hell on earth. Christian, I want to just encourage you for a minute, the truth is you're not even coming close. The things that you and I go through will never compare to what the punishment of hell and torment will be like. Why talk about it? Because the more you know about it, the more you'll want to choose Jesus. The Lord lets us know the difference between heaven and hell because the choice then is a no brainer. How many of you understand what I'm talking about? It really is no choice at all.
The Bible describes hell with very graphic detail. Teenager, I want you to listen to me this morning, I want you to know the good news of Jesus Christ but also want you to understand what awaits those who don't choose to serve the Lord. Sir, you may have a good looking woman at work, you may have someone else who's not your wife but I want to tell you that you need to make sure that you serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Lady, you may be going through a hard time and wonder where God is but the truth is, seek Him and hold onto Him with all your heart because He's the deliverer, the one who will set you free. The enemy has nothing to offer you that will make a difference in your life like Jesus will.
Hell is very real, it's tangible. You can feel it, you can see it, you can breathe it, you can hear it and you can taste it. Hell is a place of torment. Some Christians forget. We can get so involved in our sins and so involved in our lives that we forget. It's a place of unspeakable lonliness, a place of immense regret where day after day you will relive the things that you did and wish you didn't do them and there will be great sorrow over the choices that were made for eternity, just as heaven is impossible to describe in all its beauty. The truth is this, the glory of God when it comes into our services, the presence of the Lord, the things that we read about, heaven can never adequately describe the beauty that awaits us.
The things that we will read about hell will never describe the horror that awaits. It's not humanly possible to describe it, nothing can compare with it, not a nightmare that you've had, no horror movie that you've seen could ever capture the terror that will be there. The horror movies that we watch, the things that you've seen, the things that scare you are actually inspired by the devil himself just to give you a little taste of what you think it might be like. There will be fire there but there will be no light. It is a place of physical, mental and emotional agony, a place of suffering and emotional sorrow. It is a place where you will feel the humiliation of everything you have ever done.
It is a place of instability, a place where there will be nothing to distract from the suffering and the insecurities that you have.
It is a place of utter dissatisfaction everyday and the worst part is that you will be separated from God and you will know it.
Someone once said, "If serving God is like that then I want to die and go to hell and party with my friends". How many of you realize when you were reading about Lazarus that there is not going to be any party going on in hell. I heard someone say that the other day on a television show. They were saying, "The people that I know are not going to heaven and I don't care about this God. I want to die and party with my friends in hell". I wanted to jump through the tv screen. I didn't want to slap him or kick him, I just wanted to cry all over him. I wanted to say, "Brother, you have no idea what you're saying, you have no clue".
You will be surrounded by people but you will be alone. Matthew 22:12 describes it as a place of outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Not just darkness but outer darkness. It's a place so black that although you will sense the things going on around you, you will not be able to see in front of your face except the terrors that will come near you. Matthew 13:42 describes it as a furnace of fire. Revelations 20: verses 1 and 15 describes it as a bottomless abyss and a lake of fire.
Listen to me this morning, hell is real. Matthew 25:41 begins to talk about who it's for. Who is hell for? Listen to me, Christian, we need to listen and know this. "He will say to those on His left hand depart from me you cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and for his angels".
I want you to listen to me very quickly because people will say, How can we serve a God who has prepared eternal judgement for others? The truth is that fire was prepared for the devil and his angels, not for you and me. It's been there on every occasion because the devil rebelled against God and a third of the angels of heaven chose to follow him. I want to tell you there's still 2 thirds of the angels following Jesus today.
The devil makes it seem like everybody else is doing everything more for him than they are for God. The truth is more of the angels are for God than they are for the enemy. Today the enemy wants you to think that everybody is following him. The truth is more people want Jesus than want the enemy, The more people will believe the lie of the devil and go after him instead of Jesus. Hell was originally planned for the devil and his angels. I want to tell you there is a judgement for wickedness and I'm thankful for it. I'm glad the devil is going to get his due. I want to tell you I believe in heaven. The greatest insult will not be when the devil is thrown into the fire and people begin to rejoice that the enemy got his due. The truth is when that begins to happen to the devil, the people of heaven aren't going to pay any attention to it, they will begin to worship the Lamb, the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lord's. The greatest insult to the enemy is that the people are going to be celebrating his demise and are not even going to pay attention to it one second. They're going to be giving glory to Jesus. How many of you are going to be a part of that great throne?
I want to remind you this morning, the devil is not his name. Satan is the name of the devil. Devil is a title and it means deceiver and accuser. Jesus is the Christ and it means the annointed one and the deliverer, the Messiah. What a difference. Satan deceives us into hell but Jesus came to deliver us from hell. Jesus is the lamb of God that was slain from the foundation of the world. Revelations 20 verses 12 and 15 says, "I saw the dead small and great stand before God and the books were opened and another book was opened which is the book of life and anyone not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire". The truth is there is a book that has been written about your life and about mine. There have been times that I've prayed, "Lord, if you were still writing I'd like my life to be an example and put into the Bible" but the truth is this, God is already writing your story down. There's another book, the Lamb's book of life. You know that sounds so old fashioned sometimes but the truth is that old fashioned lamb's book of life is still being written today and all those whose name isn't found written in it will also will be cast into the lake of fire.
Let me ask you, is your name in the Lamb's book of life? Have you left your life of sin and have you accepted the work of Christ on the cross? Let me ask you this morning, Christian, are you actually living for Him? Why is that important? Because how many of you know as Christians that we're to live for Him everyday? The Bible talks about those who will go to hell and those who will go to heaven. We just read that those who are written in the Lamb's book of life will see heaven. I want to speak to you just for a minute because it's very important. There's a gospel that's being preached today called the gospel of inclusion. It says that Jesus died on the cross so everybody is going to heaven regardless of who they are. As a matter of fact one famous preacher who pastored a church of about 4000 people got up one Sunday and said God revealed this to him, that no one is going to go to hell and everyone is going to heaven, everybody, because Jesus died on the cross and whether everyone knows it or not, whether they've received Christ or not, they're still going to heaven. Listen to me. This gospel is being preached all over the world right now. As a matter of fact its being preached in our churches. Christians are being taught to be so accepting and so loving and so grace minded that we don't preach the whole gospel of Jesus Christ. Many people are being graced into hell instead of understanding that it was the grace of God that came and set us free so that we could go to heaven. My brother is a homosexual and he's still going to go to heaven, he grew up in church but not if he hasn't repented of his sin and turned from his way. What's the difference between the preacher who watches pornography and the man who has an affair, nothing. Are you living for Jesus?
I want us to read a couple scriptures about those who go to heaven and those who don't. Christian, why do I feel so passionate about this? Why would God lay this on your pastor's heart to speak? Not because I think the majority of the people in this room are going to hell. Aren't you glad? Some of you might, so if you get convicted this morning you better respond to the altar call. As we seek the face of God, there are a lot of nice people in this world and a lot of nice people doing a lot of evil things and unless they know Jesus they're not coming with us.
The healthcare system is interesting, that will be another message someday but I was sitting in the hospital with my grandmother this week. Sometimes the places where they go to rehabilitate aren't necessarily where the most sharpest mind people should be. There was a lady down the hall yelling, "Help me, help me". She really didn't need help, she was losing it, she needed compassion. They were cleaning her room and she was sitting in the hallway in her wheelchair. She looked right at me, she didn't know whether I worked there or not so I reached my hand down on her and said, "Jesus, help her, just comfort her and be with her". She looked at me and said, "Sonny, I don't need Jesus right now, I need to go to my room. Stop praying for me and push me in my wheelchair and get me to my room". As funny as that was and as precious as she is, the truth is there's a lot of people wanting us to do other things for them instead of bringing them Jesus. That lady had an excuse because she had lived her life and her mind was wore out. Listen, as your parents and your grandparents get older, just love them. They're not a problem. You weren't a problem when you were born. As a matter of fact, you probably were a problem when you were born. Some of you were a problem when you were teenagers but they still loved you anyway. If they changed your diapers when you were young you can change their diapers when they're old. Be an example.
Listen to me, but who's going to go and who's not? Galatians 5:19-21 says, "Now the work of the flesh are evident which are adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambition, dissentions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries and the like, of which I tell you beforehand just as I also told you in the time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God".
I'm a diehard Steeler fan, as a matter of fact I brought back a lot of Steeler stuff with me. One of the things I've watched are a lot of good people on Steeler Sundays getting drunk and watching the game. They need Jesus more than they need the Steelers to win. Matthew 13:41-42 says, "The Son of man will send out his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all things that offend and those who practice lawlessness and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth". Look at verse 43, "Then the righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the Kingdom of their father. He who has ears to ear let him hear". It's when the wickedness goes, the righteousness shines. I want you to read this last part, Matthew 7:21 and 23, "Not everyone who says to Me, Lord Lord, shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven but He who does the will of my Father in Heaven". "In that day, Lord Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name and done many wonders in your name and then I will declare to them, I never knew you, depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness". Revelations 21:8 says, "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake of fire, in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone which is the second death".
Listen to me please, religion won't save you. There are many who call themselves Christians who are not obeying God's will for their life. I want you to look at me, all of us together as believers in Christ, are you obeying the Lord today? You see, the good news about heaven is that all those who follow Him are going to go but let me ask you, Christian, are you being obedient to Christ? Why is it so important that a church who wants to seek the face of God, that wants the presence of the Lord, that needs Him and is saying God, come and touch us, come and do a work in us, come and stir our hearts, put a fire inside of us. Why is it important that those type of people who are praying those types of prayers need to hear about hell? Because there are many people in the churches today, there will be thousands of them, when the rapture happens that will still be in the house of God saying, "What happened?" but they will know that they did not obey. There will be worship leaders leading worship and the rapture will happen and they'll still be playing. There will be preachers in the middle of preaching that have not been obedient to God, half of their church will go and they might be standing alone. People that have seen the dead rise, people healed. Let me ask you, why is it so important? Because serving God in this day and age has become so casual, "Lets just come to church and get it over with and lets move on. The rest of the week I'll do what I'm going to do".
The truth is, those who know Christ and seek Him everyday, that made Him a priority, those are the ones who know the Lord. Well pastor, who can go? Everyone who's name is written in the lamb's book of life. Without hell, the church has limited Jesus to a benevolent provider, a caring doctor and a wise counselor. Without hell, Jesus simply has a loving heart and a kind demeanor and a nice bedside manner. The truth is this, He is the King of Kings, He is the coming King who has conquered sin and death, He has vanquished the enemy, He has forgiven our sins, He heals our diseases, He restores broken lives, that is the God that we serve, that is the Jesus we know and that is the one that we need to serve and know that is coming again. There is a hell, that is why we must preach the gospel, that is why we must share the good news.
You want to see this church turn around. We've been saying, God, come and do this. You know as people come back from vacation this place will be jammed to the hilt but there's still so many more that don't know Christ. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promises, not willing that any should perish but that all would come to repentence".
